Brenda York has over 25 years of experience in the visual arts. She graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in fine arts and has continued her education in the studio arts at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Idyllwild Arts and, most recently, the Athenaeum in La Jolla.
Her work in illustration and graphic design proved to be a major influence on her painting career. Ms. York's ability to create compelling compositions as well as striking colors are a direct result of her years studying and working in design and illustration.
Ms. York has won awards in regional and national competitions. Most recently, her painting, Flipside, was included in the "Opposites Attract" show at San Jacinto College in Houston, juried by William Stover, Assistant Curator for the Department of Contemporary Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She received an Honorable Mention distinction for her painting, Vanishing Memory, in the Museum of the Living Artist's Regional Show. This year her paintings have been included in several juried regional shows at the San Diego Art Institute. Her work was featured in the April 2007 edition of the Presidio Sentinel titled "Blogspotting". Ms. York has been named as "Featured Artist" in the 2008 ArtWalk Show in San Diego, an award given to only 12 artists from a pool of 400 ArtWalk artists.
She is a member of The San Diego Art Institute, The Athenaeum and The Daily Painters Gallery, an online, juried gallery.
Ms. York's paintings are in private and corporate collections across the country. Born in the Midwest, she now lives and paints in the Mission Hills community of San Diego, California.
